Avantone Active Mixcubes Review

[fresh_divider style=”dotted”]

The Avantone Active Mixcubes are some unassuming looking reference monitors. They can sit on monitor stands, a mix desk or on top of larger reference monitors. You can even screw the Mixcubes on mic stands and use those as your monitor stands. Even though the Mixcubes are small, they have a nice weight to them. The highlight of the Mixcubes is that they sound bad and that is a good thing.

How Do They Work?

The Avantone Active Mixcubes are active hence the name so they have built-in amplifiers. Just plug them in and run some good audio cables to them and you’re set. They look well-made compared to my more expensive monitors. The power switch is located on the back and a gain knob for adjusting levels. You can plug-in a 1/4 inch connector or XLR for audio.

Sound Quality

They sound bad and that is the purpose. You have to make your mix sound good thru these monitors. The Mixcubes gives you a sense of balance of your mix. I can easily identify if the kick drum is poking out or instruments clashing. The monitor speakers are small and help give the listener a real world perspective to hear your mix. The Mixcubes can limit the trips to the car to hear how your mix translates. Many say the Avantone Active Mixcubes are a secret weapon for an audio engineer. You still have to use your ears but these little speakers are a good reference. I do not suggest the Mixcubes as your main monitors because they still lack detail in certain frequency ranges. These are better suited for a secondary reference monitors. The Mixcubes can excel in stereo but some say monitoring your mix with one Avantone Mixcube in mono is better. Either way, these monitors do deliver.

Are they worth it?

Yes they are worth it. The Mixcubes save me a trip to my car or constantly searching for my boom box to listen to my mix. The price maybe out of reach for some but if you need another reference I suggest the Avantone Active Mixcubes.
